Verdict: hands-on claims tour, Ultra 4 angle — explains the LED-regrouping mechanism behind 5-second background HR, praises daytime HRV as an industry first, likes the reworked Extended/Max Extended GPS modes, holds the same manufacturer-study and 24/7-Siri-recap reservations; in-depth review before the Sept 18 ship date
TL;DR
- The Ultra 4 sibling to the same-day Series 12 hands-on, shot at Apple Park in the same session — and it carries the mechanism the Series 12 video left out: the LED array has been rearranged so the color diodes are now clustered by type (four green, four red, four infrared), which lets Apple drive 24/7 background readings off the green LEDs instead of the infrared ones. That's why background HR could go from every 5 minutes to every 5 seconds; it's an LED-grouping change, not just a faster sample loop.
- Apple's white paper names its comparison devices: Garmin Forerunner 970, Samsung Watch, Whoop band, Oura Ring. Ray's stance is unchanged — "anytime you have a study sponsored by the company that's releasing the study, yeah, who knows about the accuracy of the study" — with his own 18-year methodology (himself plus his wife) to follow in the in-depth review.
- HRV detail beyond the Series 12 video: the daytime HRV values are first exposed 2 hours after you wake, then update through the day; the 7-day/4-hours-per-night baseline rule applies; and both RMSSD and SDNN are now exposed and available to developers depending on the data source.
- Ultra-4-specific battery: 50 hours normal use (audio intelligence included in that claim). The old "low power" and "reduced" profiles are renamed and reworked — Extended takes GPS workouts from 20h to 25h (kills always-on display + running form metrics, trims cellular), and Max Extended reaches 48h while keeping 1-second GPS, dropping only multi-band to single-band and displaying a rolling 5-minute HR average while still recording at full fidelity. Both now live on the sport profile page instead of buried in settings.
- Same privacy reservation about 24/7 Siri recap, argued a step further: "sometimes the most secure implementations aren't as secure as we thought at the end of the day." Pricing $799 base, new translucent ocean bands plus Hermès editions, orders Saturday, ships Friday the 18th.
Key moments
- [00:01] In-medias-res open — three Ultra 4s held to the lens in the crowded hands-on area, one already showing the Max Extended Workout screen (frame_0001); premise stated as Apple's claim, not his own: "what Apple is touting as their most accurate heart rate sensor yet."
- [00:33] S11 chipset + secure Exclave — shared with the Series 12; the Exclave is what enables audio intelligence, flagged upfront as "pretty darn controversial."
- [00:56] The claim and the white paper — "the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable" (frame_0019 shows the keynote slide, frame_0021 the study PDF), benchmarked against the Forerunner 970, Samsung Watch, Whoop, and Oura. Immediate caveat about manufacturer-sponsored studies; his own testing with 18 years of methodology to come (frame_0023, frame_0025, frame_0027 show his running/trainer/rowing reference footage).
- [01:41] Sensor teardown in three layers — ECG electrodes redesigned into a petal layout, +24% surface area (frame_0033); photodiodes go from four circular pockets to eight windows (frame_0035); and the LED array is regrouped into clusters of four green, four red, four infrared (frame_0031 shows the Ultra's 49mm titanium case back).
- [02:18] The mechanism — background 24/7 readings move from the infrared LEDs to the green ones, enabling HR every 5 seconds instead of every 5 minutes. Workout-mode sampling is unchanged; only the background path improved.
- [02:48] HRV into Vitals — from a handful of readings per night to every 5 minutes; 7-day baseline, 4-hour minimum per night (frame_0045 shows the overnight "Favorable" card).
- [03:51] The industry-first bit — daytime HRV exposed to the user, surfaced 2 hours after wake and updating through the day. "I don't know of any other wearables that are doing this today."
- [04:28] For the geeks — both RMSSD and SDNN now exposed depending on source/time/activity, finally making Apple's HRV comparable to third-party devices; developers get access to both data types.
- [04:52] Readiness score — 0-10 plus Recover / Pace yourself / Ready / Go for it (frame_0057 on-wrist: 7 "Ready"), built from rings, workouts, training load, overnight vitals, and sleep score vs baseline; updates intraday; requires Series 12 or Ultra 4 because it depends on the new HRV stream.
- [05:44] Health app redesign — AI summaries ("very similar to what you would see from Whoop or Google Coach… but free"), longevity tab across seven factors (frame_0067), Health Age from sleep/VO2max/HRV/HR/exercise minutes/steps plus optional labs that can now auto-sync from partners (frame_0069, frame_0071).
- [07:04] Living-room tests — 6-minute VO2max test (5-minute ramp + 1-minute cooldown) using the phone (frame_0073, frame_0075), plus flexibility, movement mechanics, strength, and sit-and-stand assessments. Later this year, beta, English first.
- [07:44] Ultra 4 battery + new sport modes — 50h normal; Extended 20h→25h GPS by dropping always-on display and running form metrics; Max Extended 48h keeping 1-second GPS (multi-band→single-band), full-fidelity HR recording but a 5-minute rolling average on screen, no splits/alerts/custom workouts (frame_0078, frame_0080 show the Extended Workout screen). Now reachable from the sport profile page.
- [09:22] Audio intelligence, four features — sound recognition; Live Rewind (15-second rolling text buffer, no audio retained); Siri recap; instant Shazam via on-device digital signature instead of an uploaded snippet.
- [10:46] Siri recap, the controversial one — 24/7 transcription summarized, never verbatim, no speaker attribution (names appear only as subjects of tasks): "from a legal standpoint, you're not having something that theoretically anyways is transcribing your entire day." The exception remains a Live Rewind snippet manually saved to Siri, which keeps its exact text. Focus-mode-style place/time/day toggles per feature.
- [12:09] His reservation — useful for meeting notes, but "I don't really want my watch recording and even just summarizing my entire day, like every conversation with my wife or my kids"; and "sometimes the most secure implementations aren't as secure as we thought."
- [13:21] The unanswered battery question — what does 24/7 audio processing cost? Apple deferred to the later-2026 beta, though it's already inside the 50-hour Ultra 4 claim.
- [13:41] Colors, bands, pricing, dates — same titanium finishes, new translucent ocean bands, Hermès editions at "crazy pants pricing"; $799 base, orders Saturday, ships Friday the 18th; in-depth review before then.

Identical formula to his Series 12 hands-on, and deliberately so: one continuous handheld shot for the full 10 seconds, arm extended with three Ultra 4s fanned toward the lens in the noisy Apple Park demo area (frame_0001), crowd and press visible behind. The pattern is in-medias-res proof-of-presence — no title card, no intro, the product physically in hand before a single specification is named. The one rhetorical tell is in the wording: the escalating claim is explicitly attributed rather than asserted ("what Apple is touting… according to claims they have"), which frames the entire video as claims-to-be-tested before the analysis even starts.
Editorial profile
- Shots: 80
- Cuts/min: 5.54
- Mean shot length: 10.84s
- Median shot length: 5.79s
- Talking-head ratio: n/a (opencv not installed)
Event-turnaround hands-on twin of the Series 12 video (5.5 cuts/min, 5.8s median inside a 10.8s mean): handheld demo-area footage and macro case-back shots cut against long garden interview takes, numbered chapter cards counting up to 24, Apple keynote slides and app renders for the software sections, and his own run/trainer/rowing reference footage seeded as a promise of the accuracy review to come.
Quotable moments
- [01:11] "Anytime you have a study sponsored by the company that's releasing the study, yeah, who knows about the accuracy of the study."
- [04:00] "This is pretty much an industry first to expose the daytime HRV readings in a readable way to consumers."
- [06:08] "Very similar to what you would see from like Whoop or Google's Coach subscription service there, but free. So, that's a pretty big deal."
- [08:55] "When I do an ultra, I don't really care about what the exact heart rate is at any point in time for the most part. So, a 5-minute average, I'm totally fine with that."
- [12:18] "I don't really want my watch like recording and even just summarizing my entire day, like every conversation with my wife or my kids is being summarized behind the scenes."
- [12:36] "Sometimes the most secure implementations aren't as secure as we thought at the end of the day."
Entities mentioned
- People: dc-rainmaker
- Companies:
apple, Garmin, Samsung, Whoop, Oura, Google, Shazam, Hermès - Tools / products: apple-watch (Ultra 4, Series 12), S11 chip (secure Exclave), Apple Health app, Vitals app, Siri, Garmin Forerunner 970, Whoop band, Oura Ring
- Places: Apple Park (hands-on area and garden)
Concepts surfaced
- green-led-background-sensing: the hardware reason the 24/7 sampling rate could jump — regrouping the LED array by color (4 green / 4 red / 4 infrared) let Apple move background readings off infrared and onto the green LEDs, so 5-minute background HR became 5-second.
- manufacturer-study-skepticism: a vendor white paper naming its own comparison set (Forerunner 970, Samsung, Whoop, Oura) is a starting point for testing, not a result.
- sdnn-vs-rmssd: both statistics now exposed per data source and available to developers, making Apple HRV comparable to third-party devices for the first time.
- ambient-audio-privacy: summarization-not-transcription as a deliberate legal design ("you're not having something that… is transcribing your entire day"), undercut by the observation that secure implementations don't always stay secure.
- full-fidelity-recording-reduced-display: Max Extended records 1s GPS and full-rate HR while showing a 5-minute rolling average — savings come from the display and radios (multi-band→single-band), not from throwing away data.
- renamed-and-retuned-modes: the old low-power/reduced profiles resurfaced as Extended/Max Extended, moved from deep settings to the sport profile page — a discoverability change that matters as much as the battery numbers.

[00:01] So, these are the brand new Apple Ultra Watch 4 watches. Watches that include
[00:03] Watch 4 watches. Watches that include what Apple is touting as their most
[00:05] what Apple is touting as their most accurate heart rate sensor yet. One that
[00:07] accurate heart rate sensor yet. One that beats all of their competitors according
[00:08] beats all of their competitors according to claims they have. But, there's also a
[00:10] to claims they have. But, there's also a bunch of other features inside of these
[00:12] bunch of other features inside of these watches including a huge slate of new
[00:14] watches including a huge slate of new features on the app that comes alongside
[00:16] features on the app that comes alongside of it that are worthwhile noting. So,
[00:18] of it that are worthwhile noting. So, let me just walk through all the new
[00:19] let me just walk through all the new features on these watches one at a time.
[00:21] features on these watches one at a time. Now, it's a little bit crazy right here,
[00:22] Now, it's a little bit crazy right here, so we're going to go somewhere a little
[00:23] so we're going to go somewhere a little bit quieter to do all that walking
[00:24] bit quieter to do all that walking through. Let's jump right into it. Okay,
[00:26] through. Let's jump right into it. Okay, so we got ourselves a little bit quieter
[00:27] so we got ourselves a little bit quieter spot here to dive through all the
[00:29] spot here to dive through all the technical details. And there are a lot
[00:30] technical details. And there are a lot of interesting technical details here
[00:32] of interesting technical details here that are worthwhile diving into. The
[00:33] that are worthwhile diving into. The first up is new S11 chipset. This is
[00:35] first up is new S11 chipset. This is actually shared on both these Series 11
[00:37] actually shared on both these Series 11 as well as the Ultra 4. And this has a
[00:39] as well as the Ultra 4. And this has a couple different features, but most
[00:40] couple different features, but most notably a new secure exclave, not
[00:42] notably a new secure exclave, not enclave, but exclave that we'll dive
[00:44] enclave, but exclave that we'll dive into a little bit later on that enables
[00:46] into a little bit later on that enables all the new audio intelligence features.
[00:47] all the new audio intelligence features. And there's some of those features that
[00:48] And there's some of those features that will be pretty darn controversial. So,
[00:51] will be pretty darn controversial. So, stay tuned for that. Instead, I want to
[00:53] stay tuned for that. Instead, I want to first dive into the new optical heart
[00:55] first dive into the new optical heart rate sensor package on the back. Uh
[00:56] rate sensor package on the back. Uh Apple is calling this, and I quote, "The
[00:58] Apple is calling this, and I quote, "The most accurate heart rate sensing in a
[01:00] most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable." In fact, they've even
[01:01] wearable." In fact, they've even released an entire white paper of sorts
[01:03] released an entire white paper of sorts to support this claim including
[01:05] to support this claim including comparisons against competitors like the
[01:06] comparisons against competitors like the Garmin Forerunner 970, the Samsung
[01:08] Garmin Forerunner 970, the Samsung Watch, the Whoop Band, Oura Ring, you
[01:10] Watch, the Whoop Band, Oura Ring, you name it, they're all in there. You can
[01:11] name it, they're all in there. You can download. But, of course, anytime you
[01:13] download. But, of course, anytime you have a study sponsored by the company
[01:14] have a study sponsored by the company that's releasing the study, yeah, who
[01:16] that's releasing the study, yeah, who knows about the accuracy of the study.
[01:18] knows about the accuracy of the study. Instead, I will be diving into it like I
[01:20] Instead, I will be diving into it like I always do with my methodology I've been
[01:21] always do with my methodology I've been using for the last like 18 years or
[01:23] using for the last like 18 years or something in doing sports tech reviews
[01:25] something in doing sports tech reviews of devices. So, definitely hit the
[01:26] of devices. So, definitely hit the subscribe button at the bottom there so
[01:27] subscribe button at the bottom there so you're staying tuned for that as soon as
[01:29] you're staying tuned for that as soon as it drops sometime in the nearest future
[01:31] it drops sometime in the nearest future with tons of data from both myself and
[01:33] with tons of data from both myself and my wife diving into all the accuracy
[01:35] my wife diving into all the accuracy bits. But, first I want to dive into how
[01:36] bits. But, first I want to dive into how the heart rate sensor has been
[01:37] the heart rate sensor has been redesigned. They're kind of like three
[01:38] redesigned. They're kind of like three core areas that then support a bunch of
[01:40] core areas that then support a bunch of new software features. So, starting off
[01:42] new software features. So, starting off with the ECG portion, particularly the
[01:44] with the ECG portion, particularly the electrodes that are there, that's been
[01:45] electrodes that are there, that's been completely redesigned from a style
[01:47] completely redesigned from a style standpoint. You now see this with like
[01:48] standpoint. You now see this with like pedal design there. Uh and that
[01:49] pedal design there. Uh and that increased the surface area of electrodes
[01:51] increased the surface area of electrodes by 24%, which should lead to more
[01:53] by 24%, which should lead to more accurate ECG readings. The next piece
[01:56] accurate ECG readings. The next piece down from that is new photodiodes. Uh in
[01:58] down from that is new photodiodes. Uh in the past they had this circular design
[01:59] the past they had this circular design with these basically four pockets uh
[02:01] with these basically four pockets uh within that. Now they're up to eight
[02:03] within that. Now they're up to eight windows of the photodiodes. And then
[02:05] windows of the photodiodes. And then below that there's the LED array. Now in
[02:07] below that there's the LED array. Now in the case of the LED array it's been
[02:08] the case of the LED array it's been rearranged as well so that now all the
[02:11] rearranged as well so that now all the color diodes are grouped together. So
[02:12] color diodes are grouped together. So there's four green ones, four red ones,
[02:14] there's four green ones, four red ones, and four infrared ones. They're all
[02:15] and four infrared ones. They're all clustered together by the same color
[02:17] clustered together by the same color type versus in the past they couldn't.
[02:19] type versus in the past they couldn't. That's interesting because when it comes
[02:20] That's interesting because when it comes to the 24/7 kind of background readings
[02:22] to the 24/7 kind of background readings if you will, in the past they used the
[02:24] if you will, in the past they used the infrared uh sensor for that versus now
[02:26] infrared uh sensor for that versus now they're using the green LEDs. Which then
[02:28] they're using the green LEDs. Which then gets into one of the core things they
[02:30] gets into one of the core things they can do from a software standpoint, which
[02:31] can do from a software standpoint, which is now have proper background recording
[02:33] is now have proper background recording of that 24/7 data. In the past they only
[02:36] of that 24/7 data. In the past they only recorded their heart rate once every 5
[02:38] recorded their heart rate once every 5 minutes. Now they're recording it once
[02:39] minutes. Now they're recording it once every 5 seconds in a 24/7 setting. Your
[02:42] every 5 seconds in a 24/7 setting. Your workout data remains the same as it was
[02:43] workout data remains the same as it was in the past. They'd always ramp that up
[02:44] in the past. They'd always ramp that up when you needed to workout, uh but the
[02:46] when you needed to workout, uh but the background piece is now updated. With
[02:48] background piece is now updated. With this they now increase also the HRV
[02:50] this they now increase also the HRV recording as well. So in the past you
[02:52] recording as well. So in the past you got like a handful of HRV readings per
[02:54] got like a handful of HRV readings per night, sometimes a lot more than a
[02:55] night, sometimes a lot more than a handful depending on all sorts of
[02:56] handful depending on all sorts of conditions. And now they're doing them
[02:58] conditions. And now they're doing them every 5 minutes. Uh and that's pretty
[03:00] every 5 minutes. Uh and that's pretty big deal if you're talking from an HRV
[03:02] big deal if you're talking from an HRV standpoint. Which then finally allows
[03:04] standpoint. Which then finally allows them to pull in the HRV data into the
[03:06] them to pull in the HRV data into the Vitals app. Up until now Apple's
[03:08] Vitals app. Up until now Apple's resisted the idea of having HRV in the
[03:10] resisted the idea of having HRV in the Vitals app and other areas from a user
[03:12] Vitals app and other areas from a user standpoint other than the Health app and
[03:13] standpoint other than the Health app and kind of deep in there. Now you finally
[03:15] kind of deep in there. Now you finally have HRV data like pretty much every
[03:17] have HRV data like pretty much every other wearable company out there. So
[03:18] other wearable company out there. So first I want to talk about what they're
[03:19] first I want to talk about what they're doing like every other company, then I
[03:21] doing like every other company, then I want to talk about they're doing that's
[03:22] want to talk about they're doing that's totally different than every other
[03:23] totally different than every other company. So starting off with using HRV
[03:25] company. So starting off with using HRV in the Vitals app. Each morning when you
[03:26] in the Vitals app. Each morning when you wake up you're going to see your HRV
[03:28] wake up you're going to see your HRV values there and how it compares to your
[03:29] values there and how it compares to your baseline. Your baseline takes 7 days to
[03:31] baseline. Your baseline takes 7 days to be established. Uh so you basically have
[03:33] be established. Uh so you basically have 7 nights worth of sleep. Each sleep has
[03:35] 7 nights worth of sleep. Each sleep has to be at least 4 hours to count as
[03:37] to be at least 4 hours to count as sleep. So that could be tough on a red
[03:39] sleep. So that could be tough on a red eye flight, but you have to at least
[03:40] eye flight, but you have to at least start off with that 7 days and the 4
[03:41] start off with that 7 days and the 4 hours each night and then you'll get
[03:43] hours each night and then you'll get your baseline established. So that then
[03:44] your baseline established. So that then joins the other Vitals metrics that you
[03:46] joins the other Vitals metrics that you have like your breathing rate, your
[03:47] have like your breathing rate, your SPO2, etc. That's all in there now with
[03:50] SPO2, etc. That's all in there now with HRV. But this is where things get
[03:52] HRV. But this is where things get different. Apple's also now doing
[03:54] different. Apple's also now doing daytime HRV readings. So, if you tap the
[03:56] daytime HRV readings. So, if you tap the upper right-hand corner there, you can
[03:57] upper right-hand corner there, you can toggle into the daytime mode and see
[03:58] toggle into the daytime mode and see your HRV readings throughout the day.
[04:00] your HRV readings throughout the day. This is pretty much an industry first to
[04:02] This is pretty much an industry first to expose the daytime HRV readings in a
[04:04] expose the daytime HRV readings in a readable way to consumers. I don't know
[04:07] readable way to consumers. I don't know of any other wearables that are doing
[04:08] of any other wearables that are doing this today to see your daytime HRV
[04:10] this today to see your daytime HRV readings like on the regular. Other
[04:12] readings like on the regular. Other companies use daytime HRV readings for
[04:14] companies use daytime HRV readings for all sorts of other things, including
[04:16] all sorts of other things, including recovery and stuff like that, but to
[04:17] recovery and stuff like that, but to actually show that number in a way that
[04:19] actually show that number in a way that you can see in the app, I believe this
[04:20] you can see in the app, I believe this is one of the first major apps to do so.
[04:22] is one of the first major apps to do so. Now, your daytime values are set to be
[04:24] Now, your daytime values are set to be exposed 2 hours after you wake up, and
[04:26] exposed 2 hours after you wake up, and then they'll update throughout the day
[04:27] then they'll update throughout the day after that. Now, for the geeks here, a
[04:29] after that. Now, for the geeks here, a quick fun one. Uh they are now exposing
[04:31] quick fun one. Uh they are now exposing both RMSSD as well as SDNN HRV values
[04:34] both RMSSD as well as SDNN HRV values depending on which source, which time of
[04:36] depending on which source, which time of day, which activity that is coming from.
[04:38] day, which activity that is coming from. That's a big deal cuz in the past, you
[04:39] That's a big deal cuz in the past, you couldn't really easily compare Apple
[04:40] couldn't really easily compare Apple Watch data to other third-party
[04:41] Watch data to other third-party companies. Now, you can more easily do
[04:44] companies. Now, you can more easily do that. Again, I'll dive into that more in
[04:45] that. Again, I'll dive into that more in my in-depth review, but I know some of
[04:47] my in-depth review, but I know some of you will appreciate that. Also, if
[04:48] you will appreciate that. Also, if you're a developer, you'll be able to
[04:49] you're a developer, you'll be able to access both of those data types
[04:51] access both of those data types depending, again, the data source. So
[04:52] depending, again, the data source. So then, with this new HRV data, Apple's
[04:54] then, with this new HRV data, Apple's finally joining the readiness score camp
[04:56] finally joining the readiness score camp with their own readiness score. So then,
[04:58] with their own readiness score. So then, this new score basically starts off with
[04:59] this new score basically starts off with a numerical rating of 0 to 10. 0 meaning
[05:02] a numerical rating of 0 to 10. 0 meaning like, let's not do this. 10 meaning
[05:04] like, let's not do this. 10 meaning like, go for it. Which then nicely
[05:05] like, go for it. Which then nicely corresponds to what you see below it,
[05:07] corresponds to what you see below it, which is four categories: recover, pace
[05:09] which is four categories: recover, pace yourself, ready, or go for it. And all
[05:11] yourself, ready, or go for it. And all these are based on a bunch of factors,
[05:13] these are based on a bunch of factors, including your activity rings, your
[05:14] including your activity rings, your workouts, your training load, your
[05:15] workouts, your training load, your overnight vitals, and your sleep scores
[05:17] overnight vitals, and your sleep scores compared to your normal baseline. So,
[05:19] compared to your normal baseline. So, you're establishing that baseline behind
[05:20] you're establishing that baseline behind the scenes, and your readiness score
[05:22] the scenes, and your readiness score will actually update throughout the day.
[05:23] will actually update throughout the day. So, if you do a really hard workout,
[05:25] So, if you do a really hard workout, your readiness score will drop. Whereas,
[05:26] your readiness score will drop. Whereas, if you take a after a red-eye flight,
[05:28] if you take a after a red-eye flight, your readiness score will increase.
[05:29] your readiness score will increase. Again, it's all about your readiness to
[05:31] Again, it's all about your readiness to take on the day or take on a hard
[05:32] take on the day or take on a hard workout like other companies. This can
[05:34] workout like other companies. This can be viewed either on the watch or the
[05:35] be viewed either on the watch or the mobile app. Now, your readiness score
[05:36] mobile app. Now, your readiness score requires the either Series 12 watch or
[05:38] requires the either Series 12 watch or an Ultra 4 watch because of the fact
[05:40] an Ultra 4 watch because of the fact that it is using the HRV data, which is
[05:42] that it is using the HRV data, which is using the new heart rate sensor data to
[05:43] using the new heart rate sensor data to have that more accurate and more
[05:44] have that more accurate and more frequently updated data. Um but, there's
[05:46] frequently updated data. Um but, there's also a new Health app redesign coming up
[05:49] also a new Health app redesign coming up here shortly later on this year that's
[05:50] here shortly later on this year that's going to be available to pretty much
[05:51] going to be available to pretty much everyone as long as you have a phone
[05:53] everyone as long as you have a phone that supports Apple intelligence. So, I
[05:55] that supports Apple intelligence. So, I want to walk through all the new
[05:56] want to walk through all the new features here cuz there's a lot to dive
[05:58] features here cuz there's a lot to dive into. The first one is new AI summaries
[06:00] into. The first one is new AI summaries like you see at the top there. This can
[06:01] like you see at the top there. This can give you summaries and recommendations
[06:02] give you summaries and recommendations based on your day. Again, very similar
[06:04] based on your day. Again, very similar what you would see from like Whoop or uh
[06:06] what you would see from like Whoop or uh Google's, you know, Google Coach service
[06:09] Google's, you know, Google Coach service or subscription service there, but free.
[06:11] or subscription service there, but free. So, that's a pretty big deal. Uh now,
[06:13] So, that's a pretty big deal. Uh now, within that there is now a new longevity
[06:15] within that there is now a new longevity tab. that there's a longevity tab. Now,
[06:17] tab. that there's a longevity tab. Now, longevity tab has a bunch of different
[06:18] longevity tab has a bunch of different factors. Uh that includes nutrition,
[06:20] factors. Uh that includes nutrition, metabolic and movement, sleep, hearing,
[06:22] metabolic and movement, sleep, hearing, heart, and mental well-being. Again,
[06:25] heart, and mental well-being. Again, these are all looking at your historical
[06:26] these are all looking at your historical data and how that compares over last
[06:28] data and how that compares over last little while uh to your long-term data,
[06:30] little while uh to your long-term data, which then gets into the next new
[06:31] which then gets into the next new feature, which is the health age app. Of
[06:33] feature, which is the health age app. Of course, that's something that's been
[06:34] course, that's something that's been very popular on a bunch of devices now,
[06:36] very popular on a bunch of devices now, whether it be Garmin devices or Whoop
[06:37] whether it be Garmin devices or Whoop devices. Basically, estimating what your
[06:39] devices. Basically, estimating what your actual age is compared to your health
[06:40] actual age is compared to your health age. In the case of Apple, their health
[06:42] age. In the case of Apple, their health age is based on your sleep, at your VO2
[06:44] age is based on your sleep, at your VO2 max, your HRV, your heart rate, exercise
[06:46] max, your HRV, your heart rate, exercise minutes, steps, and then optionally
[06:48] minutes, steps, and then optionally labs. So, if you have lab data, pull in
[06:50] labs. So, if you have lab data, pull in there either through one of the partners
[06:52] there either through one of the partners I can connect straight into it and then
[06:53] I can connect straight into it and then dump your lab data right into it, or if
[06:55] dump your lab data right into it, or if you want to manually enter that data,
[06:56] you want to manually enter that data, it'll all pull into your health age.
[06:58] it'll all pull into your health age. Which is then a good time to mention
[06:59] Which is then a good time to mention again that you can get that lab work
[07:00] again that you can get that lab work pulled in. That's a new feature now
[07:02] pulled in. That's a new feature now within the Apple Health to have that
[07:03] within the Apple Health to have that automatically sync in and pull that lab
[07:05] automatically sync in and pull that lab data. Now, the next new feature is a VO2
[07:07] data. Now, the next new feature is a VO2 max test that you can do in your living
[07:09] max test that you can do in your living room in 6 minutes. Typically, 5-minute
[07:11] room in 6 minutes. Typically, 5-minute test with a 1-minute cool down, uh but
[07:13] test with a 1-minute cool down, uh but you have to use your phone for this. You
[07:14] you have to use your phone for this. You can see like in the imagery over there
[07:15] can see like in the imagery over there to the side or wherever. I think you
[07:16] to the side or wherever. I think you have the phone that you place somewhere
[07:18] have the phone that you place somewhere and it walks you through this test step
[07:19] and it walks you through this test step by step. Gradually increasing to
[07:21] by step. Gradually increasing to something more painful in the course of
[07:22] something more painful in the course of 5 minutes and then giving you a VO2 max
[07:24] 5 minutes and then giving you a VO2 max score. But, this is actually not the
[07:26] score. But, this is actually not the only test that's in there. There are
[07:27] only test that's in there. There are also new tests for flexibility, movement
[07:30] also new tests for flexibility, movement mechanics, strength, sit and stand type
[07:31] mechanics, strength, sit and stand type assessments, and so on that are all
[07:33] assessments, and so on that are all included in the new revamped health app.
[07:35] included in the new revamped health app. Now, again, this app will be coming
[07:36] Now, again, this app will be coming later on this year. It's not going to be
[07:38] later on this year. It's not going to be available right now. So, something later
[07:39] available right now. So, something later on this year starting off in beta and
[07:41] on this year starting off in beta and for English first uh then expanding out
[07:43] for English first uh then expanding out from there. Now, before we talk about
[07:45] from there. Now, before we talk about the controversial audio intelligence
[07:46] the controversial audio intelligence features, I want to briefly talk about
[07:48] features, I want to briefly talk about two changes made on the watch itself
[07:50] two changes made on the watch itself around battery. Uh first one is that
[07:52] around battery. Uh first one is that they've actually extended the battery
[07:53] they've actually extended the battery life of the Ultra 4 up to basically 50
[07:56] life of the Ultra 4 up to basically 50 hours of battery life, so a little over
[07:57] hours of battery life, so a little over 2 days of battery life. And then the
[07:59] 2 days of battery life. And then the second one, there is new sport modes.
[08:01] second one, there is new sport modes. There is new extended mode and new a max
[08:03] There is new extended mode and new a max extended mode. So, these new extended
[08:04] extended mode. So, these new extended mode take the existing low power modes,
[08:06] mode take the existing low power modes, one called low power and the one called
[08:07] one called low power and the one called reduced, and rename them but tweak the
[08:09] reduced, and rename them but tweak the crap out of them. So, the first one,
[08:11] crap out of them. So, the first one, extended. Uh this one here will now
[08:13] extended. Uh this one here will now extend your GPS battery time on the
[08:14] extend your GPS battery time on the Ultra 4 to 25 hours from 20 hours in the
[08:17] Ultra 4 to 25 hours from 20 hours in the past. And it does this by first turning
[08:19] past. And it does this by first turning off the always-on display, and then
[08:20] off the always-on display, and then turning off running form metrics. In
[08:22] turning off running form metrics. In addition, the cellular operations get
[08:24] addition, the cellular operations get bashed a little bit to kind of save some
[08:25] bashed a little bit to kind of save some battery life there, but otherwise,
[08:26] battery life there, but otherwise, everything else is the same. So, the GPS
[08:28] everything else is the same. So, the GPS remains the same, your heart rate
[08:29] remains the same, your heart rate recording remains the same, all full
[08:31] recording remains the same, all full fidelity, all there. But, if you need
[08:32] fidelity, all there. But, if you need more battery life to complete that
[08:34] more battery life to complete that ultra, you can now get up to 48 hours in
[08:36] ultra, you can now get up to 48 hours in a max extended mode. The cool part here,
[08:38] a max extended mode. The cool part here, though, is that GPS remains at recording
[08:40] though, is that GPS remains at recording 1-second intervals. But, they actually
[08:42] 1-second intervals. But, they actually reduce it down from multi-band to
[08:43] reduce it down from multi-band to single-band, which honestly probably
[08:45] single-band, which honestly probably isn't that big of a deal. Uh on top of
[08:47] isn't that big of a deal. Uh on top of that, your heart rate is recorded at the
[08:49] that, your heart rate is recorded at the normal high-fidelity recording rates,
[08:50] normal high-fidelity recording rates, though they will only display on the
[08:52] though they will only display on the watch itself a rolling 5-minute average,
[08:55] watch itself a rolling 5-minute average, which to be fair, like when I do an
[08:56] which to be fair, like when I do an ultra, I don't really care about what
[08:58] ultra, I don't really care about what the exact heart rate is at any point in
[08:59] the exact heart rate is at any point in time for the most part. So, a 5-minute
[09:01] time for the most part. So, a 5-minute average, I'm totally fine with that. On
[09:03] average, I'm totally fine with that. On top of that, there's no splits, no
[09:05] top of that, there's no splits, no alerts, and no custom workouts are
[09:06] alerts, and no custom workouts are supported in that. So, again, it's
[09:08] supported in that. So, again, it's taking the reduced profile of the past
[09:10] taking the reduced profile of the past and tweaking it a bunch and giving you
[09:11] and tweaking it a bunch and giving you this new max extended mode. You'll
[09:13] this new max extended mode. You'll access that mode as well from the sport
[09:15] access that mode as well from the sport profile page in the settings there, as
[09:17] profile page in the settings there, as opposed to the past when you had to like
[09:18] opposed to the past when you had to like dive into the deep into the deep
[09:20] dive into the deep into the deep settings. Now, it's just a much more
[09:21] settings. Now, it's just a much more accessible place to go ahead and access.
[09:23] accessible place to go ahead and access. Okay, so then with all that out of the
[09:24] Okay, so then with all that out of the way, let's talk about the audio feature,
[09:26] way, let's talk about the audio feature, cuz this is pretty interesting stuff,
[09:28] cuz this is pretty interesting stuff, both tech geeky but also maybe some
[09:30] both tech geeky but also maybe some privacy concerns here. So, starting off,
[09:33] privacy concerns here. So, starting off, this is called audio intelligence. It
[09:34] this is called audio intelligence. It requires the S11 chipset on the Ultra 4,
[09:37] requires the S11 chipset on the Ultra 4, and there's basically four core things
[09:38] and there's basically four core things it's doing that I'm going to dive into
[09:39] it's doing that I'm going to dive into each one more deeply. The first one is
[09:41] each one more deeply. The first one is sound recognition. So, if you need
[09:43] sound recognition. So, if you need hearing assistance, for example, it can
[09:44] hearing assistance, for example, it can go ahead and show you on the watch when
[09:45] go ahead and show you on the watch when certain events happen, like a doorbell
[09:47] certain events happen, like a doorbell or baby crying or sirens and something
[09:48] or baby crying or sirens and something like that. It'll give you a notification
[09:50] like that. It'll give you a notification on your watch that that's happening. The
[09:52] on your watch that that's happening. The second feature is called a live rewind.
[09:54] second feature is called a live rewind. What this does is basically give you a
[09:56] What this does is basically give you a 15-second rolling buffer to see the text
[09:58] 15-second rolling buffer to see the text of what happened in the last 15 seconds
[09:59] of what happened in the last 15 seconds using the microphones on the watch.
[10:01] using the microphones on the watch. Again, all this is happening on the
[10:02] Again, all this is happening on the watch itself. The example they gave in
[10:04] watch itself. The example they gave in the keynote is right here, showing a
[10:06] the keynote is right here, showing a waiter coming in and saying a whole
[10:07] waiter coming in and saying a whole bunch of things really, really quickly.
[10:09] bunch of things really, really quickly. So, what you see at the end of this is
[10:10] So, what you see at the end of this is what you saw there, which is the
[10:11] what you saw there, which is the transcription on the watch itself of the
[10:13] transcription on the watch itself of the last 15 seconds. You only get 15 seconds
[10:15] last 15 seconds. You only get 15 seconds worth, you don't get the audio itself,
[10:17] worth, you don't get the audio itself, it's just a transcription. From that, if
[10:19] it's just a transcription. From that, if you were to scroll down, you have two
[10:20] you were to scroll down, you have two options. The first two ask Siri about
[10:23] options. The first two ask Siri about what happened in that 15 seconds, so it
[10:24] what happened in that 15 seconds, so it takes that transcription, sends it to
[10:26] takes that transcription, sends it to Siri, and goes off and asks about it.
[10:28] Siri, and goes off and asks about it. The second is to save it to the Siri
[10:30] The second is to save it to the Siri app. And again, you're saving the text,
[10:31] app. And again, you're saving the text, not the actual um audio file itself.
[10:34] not the actual um audio file itself. But, it is saving the exact transcribed
[10:36] But, it is saving the exact transcribed text. And that gets really interesting
[10:38] text. And that gets really interesting when we talk about the next feature,
[10:39] when we talk about the next feature, which is the overall Siri recaps for the
[10:41] which is the overall Siri recaps for the day, because you can save those exact
[10:43] day, because you can save those exact 15-second transcriptions into the entire
[10:45] 15-second transcriptions into the entire day. So, then let's dive into the next
[10:47] day. So, then let's dive into the next feature, it's probably the controversial
[10:48] feature, it's probably the controversial one, which is the new Siri recap. The
[10:50] one, which is the new Siri recap. The idea here being that 24/7, this watch is
[10:53] idea here being that 24/7, this watch is going to go ahead and transcribe
[10:54] going to go ahead and transcribe everything and then summarize it. Now,
[10:56] everything and then summarize it. Now, in the case of the Siri recap, it will
[10:58] in the case of the Siri recap, it will not show you the exact words that are
[11:00] not show you the exact words that are spoken 24/7. Instead, it's going to
[11:02] spoken 24/7. Instead, it's going to summarize that together. So, imagine you
[11:03] summarize that together. So, imagine you go into a meeting, it's going to give
[11:05] go into a meeting, it's going to give you meeting-style notes. I saw some like
[11:07] you meeting-style notes. I saw some like examples of this already, um where it's
[11:08] examples of this already, um where it's basically going to summarize all this
[11:09] basically going to summarize all this stuff from the meeting and pull it
[11:11] stuff from the meeting and pull it together and give you bullets and
[11:11] together and give you bullets and headlines. It does not tell you who the
[11:13] headlines. It does not tell you who the speaker was, so it doesn't say Ray said
[11:15] speaker was, so it doesn't say Ray said this or Des said this or Bobby said this
[11:17] this or Des said this or Bobby said this or John, whatever, doesn't say that at
[11:18] or John, whatever, doesn't say that at all. It will, however, include names
[11:20] all. It will, however, include names when it's talking about something, like
[11:22] when it's talking about something, like if John Doe has a task to go do
[11:24] if John Doe has a task to go do something, it will say John Doe has a
[11:26] something, it will say John Doe has a task to go and do something. Um but,
[11:28] task to go and do something. Um but, it's not otherwise going to transcribe
[11:29] it's not otherwise going to transcribe everything in a a transcript. So, like
[11:32] everything in a a transcript. So, like from a legal standpoint, you're not
[11:33] from a legal standpoint, you're not having something that theoretically
[11:34] having something that theoretically anyways is transcribing your entire day.
[11:37] anyways is transcribing your entire day. The exception to that is if you use that
[11:38] The exception to that is if you use that little Siri wine feature and then
[11:40] little Siri wine feature and then manually sent it to the Siri app, it'll
[11:43] manually sent it to the Siri app, it'll pull that into the overall recap of your
[11:45] pull that into the overall recap of your day as the actual transcription of that
[11:47] day as the actual transcription of that text for 15 seconds. Now, when it comes
[11:49] text for 15 seconds. Now, when it comes to all these features, you can enable or
[11:50] to all these features, you can enable or disable them on a per feature basis, all
[11:52] disable them on a per feature basis, all four of the core features. And in the
[11:54] four of the core features. And in the case of the Siri recap, you have even
[11:55] case of the Siri recap, you have even more options. Here you can decide when
[11:57] more options. Here you can decide when and where it's turned on. So, you can
[11:58] and where it's turned on. So, you can say only at home or not at home, only at
[12:00] say only at home or not at home, only at work or not at work, only on Mondays,
[12:02] work or not at work, only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or whatever
[12:04] Wednesdays, and Fridays, or whatever combination you want. It seems like it's
[12:05] combination you want. It seems like it's very similar to focus modes in the way
[12:07] very similar to focus modes in the way you can set up in terms of lots of
[12:08] you can set up in terms of lots of different options for turning it on and
[12:09] different options for turning it on and off. Still, at the end of the day, I'm
[12:11] off. Still, at the end of the day, I'm not really sure how I feel about this.
[12:13] not really sure how I feel about this. Like, I think there's definitely very
[12:14] Like, I think there's definitely very useful scenarios, like meeting notes and
[12:16] useful scenarios, like meeting notes and things like that to summarize that, that
[12:17] things like that to summarize that, that is awesome. But at the same time, I
[12:19] is awesome. But at the same time, I don't really want my watch like
[12:20] don't really want my watch like recording and even just summarizing my
[12:22] recording and even just summarizing my entire day, like every conversation with
[12:24] entire day, like every conversation with my wife or my kids is being summarized
[12:26] my wife or my kids is being summarized behind the scenes. I'm not sure how I
[12:28] behind the scenes. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On top of that, if
[12:29] feel about that. On top of that, if we've learned nothing from all the
[12:32] we've learned nothing from all the high-tech things over the last year,
[12:33] high-tech things over the last year, especially, including AI summaries and
[12:35] especially, including AI summaries and things like that, is that sometimes
[12:37] things like that, is that sometimes things go wrong. And sometimes the most
[12:38] things go wrong. And sometimes the most secure implementations aren't as secure
[12:40] secure implementations aren't as secure as we thought at the end of the day. So,
[12:41] as we thought at the end of the day. So, I do have concerns about that and how
[12:42] I do have concerns about that and how things might be used when things don't
[12:44] things might be used when things don't go according to plan long-term. Not
[12:46] go according to plan long-term. Not entirely sure what they're doing in the
[12:47] entirely sure what they're doing in the bushes doing back there, but I'm just
[12:48] bushes doing back there, but I'm just going to keep on going into number four
[12:50] going to keep on going into number four of the new audio intelligence features,
[12:51] of the new audio intelligence features, which is the new Shazam feature on your
[12:53] which is the new Shazam feature on your watch. Now, there has been Shazam on the
[12:55] watch. Now, there has been Shazam on the watch in the past. The way it's worked
[12:56] watch in the past. The way it's worked in the past is it records the little
[12:58] in the past is it records the little audio snippet, sends it off to Shazam,
[12:59] audio snippet, sends it off to Shazam, comes back again, you see the song some
[13:01] comes back again, you see the song some short time later. Now though, the way it
[13:03] short time later. Now though, the way it works is you raise your wrist and the
[13:04] works is you raise your wrist and the song's instantly right there. And that's
[13:06] song's instantly right there. And that's because of the fact that it's again
[13:07] because of the fact that it's again analyzing your audio 24/7 and looking
[13:10] analyzing your audio 24/7 and looking for music to go ahead and match 24/7.
[13:12] for music to go ahead and match 24/7. And now, as opposed to sending that
[13:14] And now, as opposed to sending that snippet up to Shazam, it sends a digital
[13:16] snippet up to Shazam, it sends a digital signature of what it heard, which is
[13:18] signature of what it heard, which is much much smaller, and it's just
[13:19] much much smaller, and it's just constantly doing that. Which then brings
[13:21] constantly doing that. Which then brings up like my first question on this whole
[13:23] up like my first question on this whole thing is, what does this do to battery
[13:24] thing is, what does this do to battery life? For which they didn't really have
[13:26] life? For which they didn't really have a fully great answer on other than to
[13:28] a fully great answer on other than to say it's coming in beta later on this
[13:29] say it's coming in beta later on this year and we will all get to experience
[13:31] year and we will all get to experience what that battery life looks like
[13:32] what that battery life looks like together. But, they did note in case for
[13:34] together. But, they did note in case for the Series 12 as well as the Ultra 4,
[13:36] the Series 12 as well as the Ultra 4, that at that 50 hours for the Ultra 4
[13:37] that at that 50 hours for the Ultra 4 for its battery life, that includes the
[13:39] for its battery life, that includes the audio intelligence features being
[13:40] audio intelligence features being enabled. So, then let's talk about the
[13:41] enabled. So, then let's talk about the model colors, the new bands, pricing,
[13:43] model colors, the new bands, pricing, and then availability. From model
